Church of San Graziano – Candoglia

The hamlet of Candoglia, famous for the quarry that has supplied – and continues to do so – the marvellous raw material used to build the Duomo di Milano, is the first one that you encounter on the provincial road from Mergozzo to Domodossola.
In this little hamlet you will find a Romanesque style church dedicated to San Graziano, and dating from the 11th century. It is surrounded by greenery on a site beside the road named after it at the foot of the mountain where the tunnel for quarrying pink Candoglia marble is excavated.
The Church of San Graziano has a gabled façade characterised by two tall, narrow and not very deep blind arches on each side of the portal. On the left side is a fine gabled bell tower added at a later date with respect to the building of the original Romanesque church.
In 1968, excavations conducted on the parvis of the church brought to light a large building with a rectangular floor plan that had been destroyed by fire and remains of a place of worship dating from Roman times: these remains of the past are now no longer visible, but the drawings related to the excavations and the archaeological material found, including an altar with a dedication to Jove, are displayed in the Archaeological Museum in Mergozzo.
