Montorfano archaeological museum and granite Ecomuseum – Mergozzo

Mergozzo is a land of stone and crystal-clear waters, dominated by the awesome presence of Montorfano, to which the local Ecomuseo del Granito (Granite Ecomuseum) is dedicated. It has a centuries old history, with archaeological traces dating from the stone age and preserved in the Municipal Archaeological Museum.

Visiting Mergozzo, therefore, will be like making a journey back through the centuries.

The Granite Ecomuseum involves various areas of the whole of Mergozzo’s territory and surroundings, including the areas where pink Candoglia marble, white Montorfano granite, green Mergozzo granite and pink Baveno granite are quarried. The core is Montorfano, an isolated hill that looks like a mastodontic block of white granite.
The multipurpose facilities of the former Mergozzo Dairy (inaugurated in 2019), in addition to a conference room and areas to be used as education workshops, houses an exhibition area devoted to stone with the tools and equipment used by the quarrymen and stone masons working the Montorfano granite and Candoglia marble quarries.

The history of the Archaeological Museum in Mergozzo goes back a long way: in the summer of 1969 the first small exhibition of archaeological material from the territory was staged, with the aim of bringing together and preserving some of the finds retrieved from private citizens or discovered during excavations. Finally, we can’t forget the new finds, never shown to the public before, and entrusted from the Superintendent to the original territory after an accurate cataloguing and a careful restoration.
Since 2004, the Museum has been housed in the 18th century Palazzo Tamini, which has been restored and made accessible for disabled visitors.
The museum, whose collections have been completely reorganized, is now composed of three sections dedicated to Prehistory, the Roman Age and the Middle Age. In each section visitors are guided by renewed panels, updated in their content, extended with didactic insertions and translations in English. The new showcases allow visitors to better appreciate the objects, while the three tactile posts give the possibility to experience first hand different reproductions of archaeological finds.
Everybody can customize its own visit by taking a closer look to topics of interest thanks to several thematic focuses, arranged in paper format in showcases and accessible in digital format thanks to QR codes, which allow to download textual and video contents.
The Mergozzo Archaeological Museum, where there are also tactile shelves for the sight-impaired visitors, offers courses, educational workshops and a busy calendar of activities, in constant dialogue with the territory and its centuries old history, with its waters and stone.
