The Vigezzina-Centovalli railway line, today one of the most popular tourist attractions in the Ossola Valley, which transports hundreds of thousands of passengers every year, was born in the early 20th century thanks to Italian-Swiss initiatives. The official opening of the line took place on 25 November 1923. Over the decades, the Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway has continued to innovate, increasing its vocation as a tourist railway.
The route is 52 kilometres (32 1/3 miles) long and is dotted with 83 bridges and 31 tunnels, immersed in the most authentic nature, offering passengers a slow and exciting journey between Vigezzo Valley and Centovalli, between Italy and Switzerland.
The journey on the distinctive white and blue trains of the Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway is fascinating all year round: an experience suitable for all ages and in all seasons. The autumn colours of the foliage make this trip one of the experiences not to be missed in Ossola Valley between the end of September and the beginning of November; whitewashed landscapes make it magical and romantic in winter; the explosion of green in spring and summer transforms it into a dive into the most uncontaminated nature!
Along the narrow-gauge railway line of the Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway, leaving from Domodossola or Locarno, stopping at one or more of the 32 stops also means discovering wonderful villages and landscapes.
The Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway offers special packages such as Lake Maggiore Express and the Foliage Train, but can also be used to arrive at major events in Domodossola, Santa Maria Maggiore (especially the famous Christmas markets) and Locarno in style.
