There is reliable information on exploitation of the mines in Val Toppa, in the territory of Pieve Vergonte, as from the beginning of the 19th century, when local miners excavated 17 kilometres of tunnels in several points of this part of Lower Ossola. The gold deposits in the Val Toppa were not very rich in native gold, and it was found only exceptionally in the pure state.
In 1947, mining operations, already somewhat limited, were permanently suspended.
It is now possible to visit the mines in Val Toppa: the itinerary allows you to access one of the mines, which has recently undergone reclamation and development work, making it possible to equip a long section of it safely. If you walk along the old miner’s path, you will reach the Ecomuseo delle Miniere and, in the large meadow of Alpe Fontano, the “Ca’ Bianca del Minatore”.
Wearing a cloak and helmet, and accompanied by the mine guide, you will be able to start the tour. Along the way, it is possible to see large extraction chambers, lateral crossings, vents and shafts connecting with other levels, excavated to facilitate internal handling of material and transport of the mineral and sterile rock to the exterior.
