One of the most important traditional products in Val d’Ossola is honey, which is produced in many varieties including the rare, very sophisticated rhododendron honey. We also cannot forget honeydew and propolis, effective balms against respiratory diseases and ailments.
Chestnut honey, rich in pollen and mineral salts and with a distinctive dark colour, is an excellent honey for pairing with well-aged cheese from the Ossola valleys. It has a slightly bitter taste, is highly nutritious and has beneficial qualities, including as a cough soother.
Local acacia and black locust honey is excellent combined with medium-aged cheese or as a snack.
Lime blossom honey (whose light amber colour turns within a few months, after crystallization, to hazelnut) is also very common, along with the classic wildflower honey, produced by bees that collect nectar in areas that contain many plant species.
Even the honey production in Val d’Ossola dates back centuries and was documented as early as 1300: today, honey is one of the most popular traditional Ossola products and is protected and promoted by the Consorzio Tutela e Garanzia Mieli del Verbano Cusio Ossola and by APAVO (Ossola Valleys Beekeeper Association).
