Vogogna‘s Castello Visconteo is dominated by the remains of the Rocca, an ancient fortress standing on a cliff from where it was possible to take action to control and defend the whole Ossola plain.
There is no reliable information on the date it was built: it is assumed to have originated in the early Middle Ages or to be datable from the 9th to the 10th century. It was a fortress with square towers and its purpose was essentially defensive and strategic, in close connection with the other towers built on the mountains in the Ossola area.
On the wishes of Giovanni Maria Visconti, the Rocca in Vogogna was restored in 1348, during the construction of Palazzo Pretorio and Castello Visconteo, and the piece of land on which the Rocca stands was surrounded by walls.
Today, after alternating circumstances, all that remains to be seen are three sides of the tower located on the highest point and two of the low arches that supported the rampart walk on the north side.
The remains of the Rocca are in the old hamlet of Genestredo, characterised by splendid stone rural dwellings, full of Medieval motifs.
The Rocca, therefore, standing in a panoramic position dominating the town of Vogogna, can be reached by an easy walk along a well-signposted path.
