The Parish Church in Domodossola is dedicated to two twins from Milan, Gervasius and Protasius, who were martyred in the 6th century: erected on the ruins of a 15th-century church, it was built between 1792 and 1798 and designed by architect Matteo Zucchi. The Collegiata di Domodossola has three naves with six chapels and an exquisite high altar made of polychrome marble. Left without a façade until 1953, the building was completed by architect Giovanni Creppi in 1954, on the initiative of archpriest Monsignor Luigi Pellanda.
The porch belonged to the previous church: it was created in 1648 by Bernardino Lazzaro of Val d’Intelvi. The paintings on the barrel-vault ceiling and on the sides of the porch are by Carlo Mellerio, a 17th-century Vigezzo-born artist. There is also a Romanesque serpentine portal, now incomplete, which was recovered during work on the façade. The bronze panels on the door were made by Vitaliano Marchini, an Ossola-born sculptor at the Brera Academy.
Between the entrance and the apse of the Collegiata di Domodossola, you can admire, positioned on the ten columns, wooden miniatures portraying the ascent to Sacred Mount Calvary. The frescoes inside were created by Vigezzo painter Lorenzo Peretti (1774-1851), while the fresco depicting Saints Gervasius and Protasius and the Assumption of Mary is attributed to Carlo Giuseppe Borgnis (1738-1804), who was also a painter of the Vigezzo school.
The right nave of the chapel dedicated to Saint Charles contains a very large, exquisite painting that depicts Saint Charles giving communion to the plague victims by Tanzio da Varallo. The main altar displays a large, exquisite crucifix, the masterpiece of master carver Giorgio de Bernardis from Buttogno (Vigezzo Valley). The statues of patron saints in the chapel to the right of the altar are also attributed to him or his school. The bell tower, which may have been an old tower that was later raised, stands beside the apse.
On 19th June, the date that commemorates the town’s patron saints, the patronal festival is celebrated in Domodossola: a Mass is held followed by an exciting, busy procession through the streets of the historic town centre.
