The Cadorna Line in Ornavasso is part of a system of military fortifications made up of a complex network of roads and mule tracks, trenches, artillery emplacements, communication trenches, lookout posts and tunnels.
During World War I, lines of fortifications were built as a defence against possible attacks by Austrian and German forces across the Swiss border.
They were built on the orders of General Luigi Cadorna, Chief of Staff in the Italian Army up to 1917: from 1916 to 1918 thousands of men and women from the Lower Ossola area were employed on the construction of this dense network of defences.
Today the Cadorna Line is not just an interesting itinerary for modern excursions, on foot or by mountain bike, but also an extraordinary military archaeology complex, as well as a rich heritage of trails that can be used in any season, studded with works of military engineering of great historical value.
