The Santuario del Santissimo Crocifisso, which has an elongated, octagonal shape, stands on the rock of the Sacred Mount Calvary of Domodossola and was built in 1657. In 1672, the dome and its lantern were raised and in 1686, the vestibule that protrudes onto the façade was created.
The vestibule has a barrel-vault ceiling and is supported by pillars and columns made of local serpentine stone. A few angels with symbols of the Passion were painted on the vault by Giovanni di Sampietro. Both the design and the construction of the sanctuary are attributed to Tommaso Lazzaro, who was commissioned to build other sacred buildings in Ossola Valley. The façade does not contain any openings besides the door and two small devotional windows: when you enter the Santuario, you immediately notice that most of the light comes from the dome, creating an intense atmosphere of sacred meditation.
