Oratory of Sant’Andrea – Candoglia

In Candoglia, a hamlet of Mergozzo, is the little oratory of Sant’Andrea built along the route of the ancient road, uniting the hamlet of Albo to the town of Mergozzo, abandoned after the carriage road was built. The oratory is located at the top of a flight of steps on the edge of a wood, half way up the side of the mountain, at the beginning of a path, recently refurbished, leading from the hamlet of Candoglia to Mergozzo.
The Oratory of Sant’Andrea was already mentioned in an ancient document dating from 1459. It appears that at the beginning of 1600, the inhabitants of the hamlets of Candoglia and Albo sent a plea to the ecclesiastic authorities to rebuild the oratory, a plea that was granted and allowed completion of the restoration work in 1635. The portico in front of the oratory was added centuries later, around 1940, while full restoration of the building was completed in 1985.
