Natural History Museum of Domodossola

The impressive 19th-century collection in the Museo di Scienze Naturali “Mellerio Rosmini” (Natural History Museum) in Domodossola includes a large selection of animals, insects, plants and minerals. The mineralogical section in particular comprises a remarkable range of rock samples taken during the creation of the Simplon Tunnel.
The collection, which is currently housed in three rooms in the Collegio Mellerio Rosmini, covering a total area of 155 square metres, has been enhanced over time thanks to the contribution of the school’s science teachers. A visit to the museum starts in the first room, dedicated to geology and mineralogy. This room contains samples collected during the excavation of the Simplon Tunnel, along with some relics, including the only surviving drill used to construct the tunnel.
The second room is devoted to zoology and contains an extensive series of naturalized animals. The third and final room presents, in addition to some archaeological and paleontological finds, a fascinating xylotheque with various types of wood, herbaria and Bakelite flower reproductions.
The museum collection can be visited on request and must be booked in advance calling the following number: +39 0324 482152.
