On a sunny terrace at the entrance of Buttogno, a pretty hamlet of Santa Maria Maggiore in the Vigezzo Valley, stands the Church of San Lorenzo. Worship of San Lorenzo, deeply rooted in the inhabitants of Buttogno, is testified by the presence of a large oratory as far back as 1421, which was completely destroyed and then rebuilt in 1652 in the form of the current Church of San Lorenzo.
The building is preceded by a large portico dominating the façade with its flagstone roof, totally without openings and livened up only by the great design of the cross in the tympanum. The massive stone bell tower was erected in 1776.
The interior of the Church of San Lorenzo, wonderfully frescoed, is the work of the Vigezzo painter Lorenzo Peretti and his son Carlo Giuseppe.
