The chimney sweep monument in Malesco, constructed in 1983, is a bronze statue positioned on a rock and surrounded by stylised chimneys. The sculpture, by Luigi Teruggi from Milan, depicts the small chimney sweep Fausto Cappini from Re, who died at just 13 years old after touching the high voltage electrical wires projecting from a fireplace as he finished cleaning it.
The monument of the small rüsca is a fitting icon in memory of the many young people who emigrated from the Vigezzo Valley, also known as the Valley of Chimney Sweeps, at an early age to practise this tough job. The monument is the background of a commemorative ceremony held during the International Chimney Sweep Meeting, which takes place in the first week of September each year in the Vigezzo Valley.
