Snowshoeing Toceno-Colma di Toceno

Vigezzo Valley is the valley of painters, partly due to the stunning landscape that will open up before you on a snowshoeing excursion. These routes, created by the local branch of the Club Alpino Italiano, are an excellent way to retrace several paths that are very popular in the summer, but much less busy in the winter.
They are generally not well-trodden routes, unless the opposite is specified. It is therefore always advisable to check snow conditions and to carry equipment that allows you to safely enjoy these winter experiences in Ossola Valley.
You can access Valle Vigezzo by following the motorway until the Masera/Valle Vigezzo exit and then trunk road 337, following signs for Druogno.

Description

After leaving your car near Capanno degli Alpini, beside the last houses of Arvogno, take the old mule track used by Toceno residents 50 m higher up, which zig-zags up through a pine forest on the sunny side of Valle Vigezzo. There are signs at the start of the mule track (route M25 – SI – GTA) which leads to Colma di Toceno (Colma di Fuori) and white/red signs on the clearly visible route.
After you exit the forest, climb up the snow-covered peaks past a few huts on the alpine pasture, from where you can admire one of the valley’s most enchanting landscapes: from the Ticino mountains to the Val Grande and the Swiss mountains of Canton Vallese. After crossing a wide road, turn left and continue slightly downhill until you reach the Colma di Dentro, from where you can admire a panoramic view of Valle di Arvogno, Pioda di Crana and Scheggia.
Near a beautiful renovated hut, towards the east, a flat path begins that leads past rhododendrons and ancient larches to Piana di Vigezzo. From the gondola lift arrival station, a wide, snow-covered road leads first to the buildings that overlook Valle Vigezzo and then to Colma di Toceno, on the uphill mule track, which you later also descend.

Notes

Occasionally, there may be a danger of avalanches in the section between Colma di Fuori and Piana di Vigezzo, whether you follow the path on the north side of the summit or opt for the dirt road on the south side (the suggested return route).
A safer alternative to reach the Piana is to ascend directly from Colma di Fuori in a north-easterly direction towards the summit, continuing to the Piana constantly following the ridge. Please note that this choice may cause interference with the ski slopes. We therefore ask you to pay the utmost attention and to be highly cautious.
