Snowshoeing Foppiano-Alpe Deccia

In Antigorio Valley, nature offers undreamed of snowshoeing trails! A land of natural surprises such as the spectacular Orridi di Uriezzo, deep, winding caves carved into the rock by glaciers and streams over thousands of years, Antigorio Valley has Latin and Romance origins (unlike Formazza Valley, whose origins lie with the Walser and Alemanni people).
Ascending the west side from Crodo, after passing Mozzio, you reach Foppiano and continue to climb towards the end of the road. You will arrive at a point where you can admire the sight of large, pure pastures surrounded by a crown of snowy rocky peaks.

The following routes were created by Marina Morandin and taken from the guide “Ciaspole nelle Valli dell’Ossola” (Snowshoeing in the Ossola valleys) by Marina Morandin and Marco De Ambrosis, published by Danilo Zanetti Editore.

Description

SNOWSHOEING IN ANTIGORIO VALLEY - FOPPIANO-ALPE DECCIA ITINERARY

From the Pizzo del Frate hotel, continue north along the road that climbs up to Monte Cistella. First follow signs for Scengo and then continue right along the tracks that cross undulating plains, leading to Alpe Voma (1350 m) 0h 45m. Climb the clear path to the upper Prepiana huts (1503 m), always on a quiet, sunny slope. Leave the path that ascends to Cistella in the summer and, on the right, take the consortium road (normally marked) that leads to the last stretch of well-trodden motorable road that leads to Alpe Deccia (1670 m) 3h 00m. You can also reach Alpe Deccia from Cravegna by following the good, wide road that leads to the mountain pasture, but you lose much of the magic that you can enjoy on the route from Foppiano. Take your time when you decide to do this excursion and try to avoid doing it on a public holiday (if you can!). It is lovely to stop and wander around when you reach Alpe Deccia. You can climb to upper Deccia, take photos, play in the snow and mark out new lines on the gentle slopes. On your return, you can stay overnight at the Pizzo del Frate Hotel so you can explore the next route on the following day.
