Snowshoeing Devero-Crampiolo

Alpe Devero has been part of the Veglia Devero Natural Park since 1990, along with Alpe Veglia. A white paradise for snowshoeing excursions, Alpe Devero is the starting point, in summer, for various excursions, crossings and Alpine ascents.
During the winter, hikers, ski mountaineers and snowshoers can experience Devero’s spectacular landscape, exploring new, redesigned scenery softened by a soft, white blanket of snow.
Alpe Devero can be reached via the A26 Genova-Gravellona Toce motorway, continuing along the Simplon trunk road 33 in the direction of Domodossola and then taking the exit for Crodo, Antigorio Valley and Formazza Valley. Once in Baceno, follow the left-hand road to the hamlet of Goglio where, near the hydroelectric power plant, the road turns and climbs up to the Devero car park.

The following routes were created by Marina Morandin and taken from the guide “Ciaspole nelle Valli dell’Ossola” (Snowshoeing in the Ossola valleys) by Marina Morandin and Marco De Ambrosis, published by Danilo Zanetti Editore.

Description

The loop circuit suggested here allows you to embark on a simple snowshoeing excursion to discover the charming Alpe Crampiolo and nearby Codelago lake, a 17-million-cubic-metre artificial reservoir built in 1910 when the dam was constructed to protect the natural basin.
From CAI Castiglioni refuge (where you can also hire snowshoes), follow the flat snow-covered road on level ground to the entrance to Devero, in the village “Ai Ponti”. Take the track on the left that winds between houses and huts and runs along the river.
Gradually gain altitude ascending through the larches up to Corte d’Ardui. After the clearing, you can see the Alpe Crampiolo, which you can quickly reach. Continue to the nearby Codelago dam and then return to Crampiolo. Just beyond the Fizzi inn, take a right turn onto the wide track groomed by a snowcat, which serves as a connecting road between Devero and Crampiolo. Descend through the Vallaro valley, where you quickly lose altitude, and return to the hamlet of Canton in Devero. You will soon reach the Castiglioni refuge.
