Ski mountaineering in Val Deserta

A very interesting ski mountaineering traverse that takes place in one of the harshest, most solitary environments in Ossola Valley. The route winds through the mountains of the Alpe Devero, a paradise for rock climbers, who can climb peaks such as Pizzo Crampiolo, Punta della Rossa and the Torri di Geisspfad.
It is a long climb and it requires early morning departure so you can enjoy good snow on the descent. In the Val Deserta, you must take maximum safety precautions when crossing several very steep sections.

Description

ASCENT:
Cross the Alpe Devero plain in a northerly direction. Pass through Alpe Campello and ascend the steep channel that leads to the Piani della Rossa at 2051 m.
Veer right and continue through the channel and across the subsequent slopes leading to a rocky rampart. Aim for the lowest depression and continue beyond the barrier to a very steep section (iron ladder) that you have to cross by foot. Proceed to the wide basin between Pizzo Crampiolo and Punta della Rossa: cross it, heading north until you reach Passo della Rossa at 2469 m.
Moving in the same direction, continue halfway up staying high above the small lake below. You will arrive at the slopes that lead to the southern ridge, which you can cross on skis as far as possible. Cover the final stretch on foot until you reach the summit.

DESCENT:
Head to Mittelberg Pass and descend the first stretch north-east through a wide gorge that leads to a plateau. Then continue south along slopes that are initially very steep (stay alert for possible avalanches) that lead to the bottom of Val Deserta. Cross the whole valley and continue through a wood above Codelago dam. Veer south-east and head towards the dam, from where you reach the small hamlet of Crampiolo and on the right – through beautiful valleys – Alpe Devero.
