Hiking – Via del Gries: Baceno-Ponte
Difficulty
Medium
Period
Spring / Summer / Autumn

With this second section of the Via del Gries, from Baceno to Ponte di Formazza, you will pass through two worlds: the first with villages and towns linked to the Ossola culture; the second with villages and traditions belonging to the Walsers, the Germanic people who settled in the 13th century in this area of Upper Ossola. The route from Baceno to Cagiogno follows first the splendid mule track originally along the Via del Gries and then a traditional agricultural track up to Case Cini. From Rivasco to the hairpin bends of the Casse, follow a stretch of paved road. It continues uphill, along a rather steep path that cuts through the former state road, now replaced by the modern spiral tunnel. From Fondovalle to Ponte, follow the agricultural road on the hydrographic left of the Toce river and admire the encounter between the ancient Antigorian masonry buildings and the splendid Walser houses in stone and wood.
