Hiking – The hamlets of Calasca – “The bread route”
Difficulty
Easy
Period
Spring / Autumn

In Calasca, as in Castiglione, the hamlets are scattered across a very wide, terraced area. On the ancient terraces built by man using traditional dry stone walls, in addition to potatoes, rye and corn were also cultivated, and each village had an oven for baking bread in the village centre. The capital of these villages is Antrogna, famous for its large church known as the “Cathedral in the woods”, and for its traditional army.
Gold was extracted from the heart of the mountains of Calasca, offering a major alternative source of income for the mountain people of this town.

Description

Starting in Molini (at the bus stop for those who choose to use public transport), you can visit the mysterious Sanctuary of the Madonna della Gurva, where on Ferragosto (15th August) each year a traditional celebration is held featuring a procession and blank shots fired by the Traditional Army of Calasca.
Return to the provincial road to take a side road that leads shortly after to Stra Granda, marked B00. Heading towards Castiglione you’ll see many votive chapels until you meet the B00b path that climbs to the hamlet of Vigino passing by an arched bridge. Crossing the village, you can admire an ancient washhouse and the 17th-century oratory dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. Continuing along the mule track, you first reach the hamlet of Boretta and then the town of Antrogna.
In Antrogna, the centre of Calasca, the church known as the “Cathedral in the woods” stands out, where the remains of St. Valentine the Martyr are preserved, to whom the square in front is dedicated.
From the central piazza you can go down to the hamlet of Dujamen, an ancient village and a stop-off during the historical events of the Traditional Army. From here, you can return to Molini or head towards Due Ponti.
From the central piazza in Antrogna, along Via Venerabile G. Tojetti, head towards the hamlet of Calasca Dentro. Once you reach the church dedicated to the Madonna del Buon Consiglio, route B09 descends to the Val Bianca area, at the foot of a beautiful waterfall, where gold extracted from the “Vallar” mines was worked. There’s a bus stop in the village, but you can walk along a short stretch of paved road to the Valle sul Fiume holiday farm where you can enjoy some refreshments before continuing.
Along a path, return to the church in Calasca Dentro and continue on the Stra Granda as far as the village of Barzona, crossing an ancient arched stone bridge. Continue on route B00 of Stra Granda to complete your hike in the hamlet of Pontegrande di Bannio Anzino.
