Hiking – Peak of Toceno-Vigezzo Plain

From Santa Maria Maggiore you can reach the village of Toceno by car and from here take the road to Arvogno. Leave your car at the last houses in the village and take the old mule track used by the inhabitants of Toceno 50 m (55 yards) further up, which zigzags up the sunny side of the valley through a forest of wild pine trees. There are signs at the beginning of the mule track (path M25 – SI – GTA) to Colma di Toceno (Peak of Toceno, Colma di Fuori – The Outer Peak) and white/red signs on the path, which is very clear. After leaving the wood, climb up the meadows and reach a few alpine huts, from where you can admire one of the most enchanting views of the valley: from the mountains of the nearby Canton of Ticino, to the rugged peaks of Val Grande and the mountains of the Canton of Valais. On meeting a wide road, turn left and slightly descend to the Colma di Dentro (Inner Peak), where you can admire the view over the Arvogno Valley, Pioda di Crana and Scheggia. Near a beautiful renovated hut a path begins that leads east along the flat, among rhododendrons and larch trees, to the Vigezzo Plain. From the top station of the cable car, a wide dirt road leads first to the holiday homes overlooking the Vigezzo Valley and then to the Peak of Toceno, along the mule track, which you then also follow downhill.
