San Domenico, Alpe Ciamporino and Ponte Campo are the entrances to the splendid and uncontaminated Alpe Veglia. Modern transport services (buses, ski lifts and shuttles), an integral part of this route, allow you to undertake the excursion with some additional comfort! From Ciamporino to Alpe Veglia, walk along the Flower Trail. At Alpe Veglia you can admire the vast plateau at the foot of the imposing summit of Monte Leone, the highest in the Lepontine Alps. Alpe Veglia’s accommodation facilities allow a chance for some tasty refreshments based on typical products and the descent to Ponte Campo ends the route with panoramic views of this corner of the Alps, a protected area since 1978 (the first in Piedmont).
Description
Upon arrival in San Domenico follow signs for the ticket office of the modern ski lifts of San Domenico Ski, which in a few minutes take you up to Alpe Ciamporino, at 2000 m (6500 ft) high. From here, take the route marked F50 to Balma, the entrance to Alpe Veglia. This is the “Flower Trail”, a name that explicitly refers to the great wealth of flora in this part of the Lepontine Alps. From Alpe La Balma, follow the path that leads to Cornù, the main village of Alpe Veglia, where there are also accommodation and catering facilities. After a pleasant break, take the F10 route that goes from Fornace and the Rio Frua waterfall, then continue on a stretch of mule track downhill to the bridge over the Cairasca stream and from here to “Casa del Parco-Porteia”. Finally, take the trail as far as the Cappella del Groppallo chapel and, again on a downhill road, continue until you reach the path for “Ponte Campo”. If the shuttle service is not open yet, take the paved road that leads uphill to the centre of San Domenico.
