The setting of this route is the peasant environment of the past: terraces, presses, ovens, mills… You’ll explore the hamlets of Montescheno, in the heart of the Antrona Valley, an agricultural civilisation that is still linked to the rural traditions of the past. The traditional “Autani dei set frei” festival is famous, as is the Rye Festival, which aims to rediscover the supply chain of this cereal by collecting rye, grinding it in the still working mill and baking black bread in the old oven.
Description
From Domodossola you can reach the Antrona Valley by car or bus: stop in the hamlet of Cresti. From here, climb along the mule track of the “Strada Antronesca” (C00) to the oratory of Cresti, a meeting point with the mule track of Montescheno. Continuing along the “Strada Antronesca” you pass by the Cappella d’Arvina chapel and reach the church of Seppiana. From the church, take the mule track up to Zonca, then continue in the direction of Valleggia, Barboniga and Montescheno. Along the way you’ll come across the old mill and at a crossroads go up to the village of Valleggia, a small and charming village that’s very well preserved. From Valleggia go down to the town of Barboniga: among the streets of the town you can find the oratory, the burnel (wash house), the oven and the lever press. Follow a short stretch of paved road before descending to Progno: here the village oven is still used for baking bread. Continue on to Montescheno and then, along the mule track, return to the starting point, Cresti.
