Spring / Summer / Autumn

The area around Domodossola offers endless possibilities for discovery: in addition to “Domodossola and the hamlets of Vagna”, there is another itinerary covering a section of the Via Stockalper, the road that leads to Switzerland through the Bognanco Valley.
Particularly lovely in the spring and autumn, this itinerary begins in Mocogna, a hamlet of Domodossola (and which can even be reached on foot from Domodossola following the “old wall” on the Bogna River), and then ascends to Monteossolano and, finally, to Bognanco.

Description

From Mocogna, hikers follow the trail up towards Cisore, going from the hamlet of Sant’Andrea and then continuing on – the climb is steep at first and then becomes more moderate – to the charming rural centre of Monteossolano, with its wine press.
From here the trail enters the first hamlet of the Bognanco Valley: from the Monteossolano church, travellers take the wide path that leads to the Dagliano parish, then descend until they cross the bridge over the Variola River and reach Monsignore. From this small hamlet, they descend on the trail to Bognanco. From Bognanco, the route continues down on an asphalt road until the sign for San Marco, a small hamlet that can be reached in not much time at all. Travellers then leave San Marco behind to descend on the path to the bridge that carries them to the main road of the Bognanco Valley. They then reach the hamlet of Torno and follow the signs for Barro, then for Cisore, which is reached – closing the loop – on the Giuseppe Pino Cattaneo trail, which descends, along the same mule track as the way out, to Mocogna.
