In Santa Maria Maggiore, the pumpkin-themed Fuori di Zucca event is all about autumn cooking and flavours, and it colours the old town centre of the the Vigezzo Valley in a classic seasonal orange hue. Pumpkins (‘zucche’ in Italian), from the smallest to the largest one, are the stars of the event and fittings held in Santa Maria Maggiore. They are carved and transformed into amusing characters that decorate town’s windows and streets. Apart from the side events that make up this jam-packed programme, there are many opportunities for food-lovers to taste a variety of sweet and savoury delights, all of course made with pumpkin. Typical dishes from Santa Maria Maggiore are given a pumpkin twist for ‘Fuori di Zucca’. For example, stinchéet, thin sheets of batter made with water and flour and fried on scorching iron hotplates, are served with a pinch of salt and pumpkin-infused alpine butter.
This is a real celebration of vegetable growing, with a local market selling country produce grown locally on small farms.
