A centuries-old tradition, the Domese Carnival is one of the most historically important events in the Ossola Valley.
The iconic masks of the Domodossola carnival are the Togn and Cia, a young betrothed couple who were symbolically given the keys to the city, initiating 10 days of celebrations in Domodossola, with dances, performances, shows and entertainment.
On Sunday, the last day of the Domese Carnival, the multicoloured carnival float parade and masks walk the streets of the Borgo della Cultura. Procession participants include the Comitato Pulenta e Sciriuii, the historic Corte di Mattarella, the Town Music Group (Civico Corpo Musicale), folk groups from the Ossola Valley, visitors from the Simplon Dorf village in Switzerland, and many more. The long parade ends in the stately Piazza Mercato, to celebrate the traditional marriage of Togn and Cia.
Piazza Mercato is also where the pulentatt, or polenta cookers with their trusur, stir polenta as it cooks in the traditional copper vats, which is then served with delicious sciriuii, pork salami made only on occasion of the Domese Carnival.
The golden yellow hue of the polenta, the iconic symbol of this historical carnival, appears around every corner on festoons, flags and balloons, turning the town of Domodossola yellow for several days!
