The Ossola Valley museums

With over twenty museums, precious treasure chests of cultural traditions, places that have always been tied to the historical and artistic legacy of the Ossola Valleys, from Domodossola to the small and large hamlets of this area or Lower Ossola, the museum network – enhanced by the Association of Ossola Museums – is truly abundant.

Beginning in the Lower Ossola, the Castle of Vogogna, a genuine symbol of Ossola fortifications hosting interesting temporary shows, is worth a visit, along with the Mergozzo Archaeological Museum, which includes a section on the traditional processing of local stone, featuring important pieces from prehistoric to medieval times (there is also an archaeological exhibition in Varzo in the Divedro Valley). Ornavasso has the Museo di arte sacra, a religious art museum twinned with the museum in Crevoladossola dedicated to religious architecture.

Domodossola is the capital of culture in these valleys and its Civic Museums reflect the many souls of this capital city. Having undergone years of renovations, Palazzo San Francesco now holds prestigious temporary exhibits on the ground floor, where a 13th-century Franciscan church once stood. On the first floor, visitors will find the Museum of Natural Sciences and, on the second, the Picture Gallery, the Archaeological section, Religious Art and a selection of drawings.
Nearby stands the historic Palazzo Silva, one of the most stunning aristocratic Renaissance constructions in the Alps, worth a visit to admire its architecture and the splendid furnishings in the halls. Last, but certainly not least, the fine 19th-century collection of the “Mellerio Rosmini” Natural Science Museum and the temporary exhibits at Casa de Rodis in Piazza Mercato complete the list of museums in Domodossola.

The Vigezzo Valley is also filled with small museums not to be missed: Santa Maria Maggiore holds the Picture Gallery of the Scuola di Belle Arti “Rossetti Valentini”, Museo dello Spazzacamino – the chimney sweep museum – and Casa del Profumo Feminis Farina dedicated to the Acqua di Colonia created in these mountains. Malesco boasts Mulin dul Tac and Ecomuseo della Pietra Ollare. In the small villages of Villette and Re, Museo Ca’ di Feman and the museum of the Santuario della Madonna del Sangue respectively stand. Druogno holds Museo UniversiCà, an exhibition of Alpine traditions and professions.

The Anzasca Valley at the foot of Monte Rosa also offers visitors museums closely linked to these high mountain places. Travellers to Macugnaga would be remiss to skip a trip to Museo Antica Casa Walser and the museum dedicated to mountains and smuggling. Museo dell’Immateriale is found inside a deconsecrated church in Bannio Anzino and a small museum in Calasca is dedicated to Traditional Militia, while the Battiggio Tower in Vanzone holds temporary exhibits and a small area focused on the processing of milk (Beura also has an exhibition on the same local tradition).

In the Antigorio Valley, the town of Viceno di Crodo boasts Casa Museo della Montagna, a museum that recreates a typical 19th-century home divided into three rooms – kitchen, bedroom and cellar – furnished with traditional pieces. In Premia, Museo Mineralogico holds over 3,000 minerals exclusively from the Ossola Valley, and in Alpe Devero, the small Museo dell’Alpeggio was founded to focus on the environment, crafts and products typical of these mountains.

The Ossola Valley’s network of museums is therefore a genuine journey into the traditions of this mountainous land and its customs, traditions, art and history.
