Snowshoeing Devero-Monte Cazzola

Alpe Devero has been part of the Veglia Devero Natural Park since 1990, along with Alpe Veglia. A white paradise for snowshoeing excursions, Alpe Devero is the starting point, in summer, for various excursions, crossings and Alpine ascents.
During the winter, hikers, ski mountaineers and snowshoers can experience Devero’s spectacular landscape, exploring new, redesigned scenery softened by a soft, white blanket of snow.
Alpe Devero can be reached via the A26 Genova-Gravellona Toce motorway, continuing along the Simplon trunk road 33 in the direction of Domodossola and then taking the exit for Crodo, the Antigorio Valley and the Formazza Valley. Once in Baceno, follow the left-hand road to the hamlet of Goglio where, near the hydroelectric power plant, the road turns and climbs up to the Devero car park.

The following routes were created by Marina Morandin and taken from the guide “Ciaspole nelle Valli dell’Ossola” (Snowshoeing in the Ossola valleys) by Marina Morandin and Marco De Ambrosis, published by Danilo Zanetti Editore.

Description

At the entrance to Devero, take the flat road to the left (west), which quickly leads to the departure point of the chairlift. Cross the bridge over Rio Buscagna just beyond and enter the larch forest. Near the waterfall, start the climb through the forest, which thins out as you get higher, until you reach the basin where Alpe Misanco (1907 m) is situated. Staying high above the valley, continue along the slope on the right until you see the ski lift arrival station on the left. From here, you can quickly reach the cross on the summit. You can descend via the same route as the ascent or by keeping to the edge of the ski slope. Due to its ease, the climb to Monte Cazzola (2330 m) is a classic trip that is very popular in winter among ski mountaineers (many try out climbing skins for the first time here) and snowshoers: it is easy to find the track, which is marked and clearly visible in the snow.
As you penetrate into the larch forest, the countryside resembles a fairytale landscape. From the summit, the view is very rewarding, embracing the faces of Punta Devero, Pizzo Cornera and Pizzo Cervandone to the north and Pizzo Diei and the Cistella plains to the south. Looking west, you can see the mountains of Alpe Veglia and to the east, Alpe Devero.
