Snowshoeing Maulone-Alpe Solcio

After parking your car and putting on your snowshoes, take the well-trodden track that leads up to the consortium road (vehicle access is banned here), before the votive chapel. The path rises very suddenly and enters the forest. After the first bend, the slope becomes gentler and you soon reach Alpe Plè (1111 m) 0h 30m. From here, continuing along the well-trodden track, you reach Alpe Salera (1203 m) 1h 00m, a wonderful view point for admiring the surrounding peaks that crown the valley and Val Cairasca below. Head towards Alpe Calantiggine (1439 m) 1h 50m, a large, sunny Alpine pasture that is sometimes windy. From here, the route is usually covered by heavy snow, even in years of low snowfall. After crossing the Alpine pasture, you can climb up through the coniferous forest, keeping to the well-trodden track, or take detours marked by white/red flags that make the route faster and… steeper!
Once you have passed the junction that descends towards Varzo, the last bends reveal Alpe Solcio. After a short climb, you arrive at the Crosta refuge (1751 m) 3h 00m.
It is a wonderful excursion through Alpine pastures and forest in an extraordinarily beautiful setting.
