Snowshoeing Prà del Bosco

Best-known for the Alpe Veglia Natural Park (time stops here in winter when numerous avalanches block off access to the area), the Divedro Valley offers various routes for snowshoers and ski mountaineers, such as Alpe Solcio and Alpe Fraccia.
It can be reached by taking the A26 Genova-Gravellona Toce motorway, following signs for the national border. After Domodossola, continue on the 33 trunk road signposted for Simplon until the junction for Varzo.

The following routes were created by Marina Morandin and taken from the guide “Ciaspole nelle Valli dell’Ossola” (Snowshoeing in the Ossola valleys) by Marina Morandin and Marco De Ambrosis, published by Danilo Zanetti Editore.

Description

This is a typical mid-winter excursion, for which you can have a later start, without having to worry. It is suitable for the whole family and allows you to relax at an excellent holiday farm and savour typical local products.
After leaving “La Fraccia” holiday farm, follow the path which, passing through a beautiful larch and fir forest, leads slightly uphill to Prà del Bosco (1413 m). The cardinal rule is to walk in silence and to pay attention: you will easily be able to spot deer on this route! After admiring the stunning view from the huts on the Alpine pasture, continue downhill, following the fun hairpin bends in the middle of the forest until you reach Alpe Cioina (1143 m). From here, you can see from Val Cairasca below to the surrounding peaks, including the famous Monte Cistella, one of the most beautiful summits in Ossola. And now you can simply return along the easy, flat path to the starting point. Several wooden signs guide the way.
