Hiking – Ornavasso and the Linea Cadorna military fortifications
Difficulty
Easy
Period
Spring / Autumn

Ornavasso, strategically positioned at the entrance of the Ossola Valley, has ancient origins, as is testified by the two vast necropolises discovered at the end of the 19th century, among the most important of the entire western Po Valley area, both for their antiquity (3rd century B.C. to 1st century B.C.), as well as for the characteristic cultural influences presented by the findings. Ornavasso is an important Walser centre, a nerve centre for the transport of goods, with precious artistic and architectural remains. Even more important is the defensive system of the “Linea Cadorna”, dating back to the First World War: a complex network of roads, trenches, walkways and tunnels now accessible and passable thanks to important restoration works.

Description

The route starts from the square of the railway station in Ornavasso, which can also be reached in a few minutes from the bus stop. Follow the road that leads to the town hall square. Follow the narrow backstreet Via Alfredo Di Dio to reach “Albergo Italia” and then from here, turn right uphill towards the interior of the village, passing by the old dairy. Join path A00a coming from Gravellona Toce and you can reach the remains of the Rotonda crucifix and the square of the parish church of 1587 dedicated to San Nicolao. Leave the “Via Crucis” on your left and climb up a comfortable mule track to the Watchtower and the Sanctuary of the same name. Follow a short downhill section until you reach the mule track surrounded by the chapels of the “Via Crucis”, through which you reach the Sanctuary of Madonna del Boden. To get back, walk on a paved road up to the Ancient Marble Quarry, then take the military road of Via Cadorna up to the Fort of Bara and from here you can go down the comfortable mule track that runs along the military posts and trenches. You’ll reach the archaeological area of the ancient necropolis, pass the picnic area and take path A00a that runs along the rocky wall and, after meeting the crag, leads to the area around Laghetto delle Rose. The route continues along roads in the village of Ornavasso until it returns to its starting point.
