Crevoladossola, like other towns in the Ossola Valley, is not just one single place, but a collection of about 30 small settlements. Although little known, Crevoladossola has played a very important role in the Ossola Valley: its unique position has always made it the gateway to the two Antigorio and Divedro Valleys, obligatory passages for goods destined for the heart of Europe through the Simplon, Gries and Arbola passes. These large businesses were controlled by two historical families of Crevola, the De (da) Silva family and the De Semonte family (who later became known as Da Ponte). The hamlets bear more or less recent testimony to the work of man: marble quarries, glassworks, cultivated fields and grazing cattle…
Description
Once in Crevoladossola, before starting the route, it’s advisable to visit the valuable 15th-century church of San Pietro and San Paolo, inside which there are valuable works including the polychrome stained glass windows dated 1526, by the Zurich master glass-maker Hans Funk.
To start this route, take the mule track that leaves the road shortly after the town hall of Crevoladossola and leads to the high hamlets. After a short stretch, turn left towards Ternaro, then continue towards Borgo dell’Era as far as the Pinone Oratory. After a short stretch of road and at a washhouse, take the mule track that leads to Enso and after passing the oratory you reach the village with its old houses. Now the mule track continues until it joins the paved road to the alpine pastures of Colmine. Proceed along the road as far as the oratory of Simbo; leaving the A09 path on the left, go between the old huts and then descend into a small valley that leads to the beautiful bridge of Cusione. After passing a chapel you reach Cusione Dentro and then Cresto. Follow a stretch of road and then deviate, where there’s a water basin, towards the loading basin of the Crevoladossola power station, cross it on a footbridge and continue in the direction of Castagnolo and from here you reach the junction for Ternaro and the centre of Crevoladossola.
