The Oratory of Sant’Antonio da Padova – Toceno

The Oratory of Sant’Antonio da Padova, probably dating back to early 1500, was the first sacred building built in Toceno. From 1600, with the separation of the parish of Toceno from that of Santa Maria Maggiore, it became to all intents and purposes the parish church of the town, waiting for the nearby and much larger church of Sant’Antonio Abate to be built.
Externally, a portico with two columns, a paved floor and two devotional windows flank the entrance gate. Internally, the oratory has a single room with a ceiling of wooden trusses, which differs with originality from the style widespread at the time in the Vigezzo Valley. The altar, which houses the statue of Sant’Antonio da Padova con il bambino in braccio (Sant’Antonio da Padova with the child in his arms), is decorated with a rich wooden altarpiece. Some interesting frescoes by Lombardian painter Battista da Legnano can still be seen today.
