The Church of the Madonna del Carmine (Our Lady of Mount Carmel), in the village of Anzola d’Ossola, was officially appointed as a Sanctuary only in 1946. The great devotion to Our Lady of Mount Carmel was already documented in 1647, but historians claim that the religious complex was built before this first record.
Originally, the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Carmine was decidedly different from its current form: it in fact consisted of a simple tabernacle, a sort of small niche, on the wall of which a precious image of the Madonna was painted. The fresco portraying the Madonna del Carmine with Jesus in her arms dates from the 20th century, and probably imitates the previous 17th century fresco.
Legend has it that, on a stormy night, a bright light coming from the old chapel guided two boatmen travelling along the river towards the bank. This episode is very probably linked to the founding of the Sanctuary itself.
The main festival is on 16th July, when a solemn procession takes place through the streets of Anzola d’Ossola.
