Church of the Annunciation – Mergozzo

The Church of the Annunciation is in the hamlet of Albo di Mergozzo and stands out for its unusually panoramic position, perched on top of a rocky spur.
The oldest records related to this place of worship in Lower Ossola can be found in a document dated 1262, but it was not consecrated until several centuries later, in November 1691, by the then Bishop of Novara, Giovan Battista Visconti.
The church has a nave and four side aisles and contains an exquisite altar dedicated to the Madonna del Santo Rosario (Our Lady of the Rosary), surrounded by fifteen copper medallions illustrating the mysteries. Outside, a Baroque-style pronaos dominates the façade and, beside the church, stands a Romanesque bell tower built entirely in Candoglia marble, subsequently plastered, leaving only some of the original small arches visible.
