Lake Mergozzo

Located at the entrance to the alpine valleys, the charming Lake Mergozzo and the town it takes its name from, full of historical and scenic treasures, open up the way to Ossola Valley.

Only a stone’s throw from the most renowned Lake Maggiore resorts, like Stresa, Verbania and Arona, Lake Mergozzo is an authentic environmental gem of the Ossola Valley. Long ago, the two lakes were joined and Lake Mergozzo was the westernmost part of Lake Maggiore. Over the centuries, the continuous overflows and flooding of the river Toce have helped to build up a strip of land separating the two lakes, thus creating Lake Mergozzo.

Lake Mergozzo, small and a little hidden, is renowned as one of the cleanest lakes in Italy: indeed, due to the absence of industrial activity, to a ban on motor boats and to an efficient sewage system, its waters are amongst the clearest in Italy. This fact, together with unique beauty of its shores, make it a very popular tourist destination, above all for the lovers of water sports like canoeing, kayaking and windsurf as well as for recreational fishing enthusiasts.

Splendid and crowded, especially during the summer season, there are numerous beaches along the shores of the lake suitable for everyone, ideal destinations for… sunbathing or for a refreshing swim in its waters.
Leaving behind the beaches, the narrow streets of Mergozzo will tell older and extremely fascinating stories: this pretty little town, awarded the Touring Club Italiano Orange Flag, is one of the most picturesque towns of the entire Ossola Valley and its lakeside promenade is an exceptionally elegant gem, with its pastel-coloured houses and the majestic centuries-old elm tree, the symbol of Mergozzo.
Not to be missed is a visit to the Archaeological Museum, a veritable treasure chest of ancient exhibits, jealously guarded in one of the most interesting museum exhibitions of the entire Ossola Valley.

West of the lake, for those who like “panoramic” hiking, a simple path that is practicable in any season of the year, climbs from Mergozzo and leads along the eastern slope of Montorfano, the solitary mountain that dominates the town. Here there is another gem, the Church dedicated to San Giovanni Battista (St. John the Baptist), perhaps the best example in Ossola Valley of the Romanesque style.

Relaxation, culture, scenic beauty and countless opportunities for outdoor activities: a perfect mix that makes Lake Mergozzo a holiday resort suited to everyone and the ideal starting point to explore Ossola Valley, entering from one of its most fascinating gateways.
