Held every July, the Witches of the Antigorio Valley takes participants on a journey through history and popular belief, unearthing events that took place during the inquisition between 1500 and 1600, which had a significant impact on the Ossola Valley.
Inquisitors hunted through the villages of Baceno, Crodo and Croveo, accusing numerous women of practising demonic rituals, women that were nothing more than knowledgeable in mountain herbs. These alleged witches were locked up, tortured and, in many cases, burnt alive.
Organised by the Associazione Le Streghe della Valle Antigorio, the event features theatrical performances, conferences, concerts, themed walks and fascinating workshops for adults and children alike, demonstrations of ancient crafts and delicious local food.
