Villa Caselli Park – Masera

Villa Caselli is a 19th century residence, located on the heights above Masera, and surrounded by a marvellous park covering approximately 36,000 square metres. Its name very probably derives from the site where it stands, still known as “ai casei”. The complex, once one of the properties of the wealthy Mellerio family, now belongs to the municipality of Masera.
Its garden deserves to be preserved due the artistic value of the ingenious forms with which it was designed and because of its uniqueness in the Ossola subalpine context. The garden of the Villa is a combination of natural elements and aesthetic ideas, expressing the 19th century taste that aimed to produce not only beauty but pleasure too.
The layout of the park, very different from that typically used for the gardens of the gentry in the Ossola area, associates a plurality of solutions already codified in the art of garden landscaping: avenues in French taste, a continuum of English style gardens, a formal parterre, regulation of the waters with effects in picturesque taste and small areas of romantic taste.

The main entry to the villa opens with a large fountain; the terrace joins the body of the villa to the grassy slope to create an authentic space for recreation and contemplation. The avenues within the park of Villa Caselli form long galleries, creating a path for amusement and strolling. The “Belvedere”, a small semi-circular panoramic balcony, once protected by a balustrade, the posts of which are now mostly dispersed, has a decidedly romantic flavour: from here there is a view over the town below and the Ossola Valley. An unusual and picturesque spot, a rare exception to Ossola gardens, is the nymphaeum, enriched by nooks and artificial grottoes: a truly unique place.

Among the shows of water that create a variety of effects in the garden, control of the stream running through the higher part of the park, achieved by a series of waterfalls and romantic little bridges is of considerable interest due to its picturesque simplicity and rustic appearance.
The garden of Villa Caselli is a constant evocation of the history of art and its discovery is certainly an opportunity not to be missed, which very harmoniously combines nature and culture, natural and constructed landscape.
In recent years, during the summer period, guided tours provide access to Villa Caselli; moreover, again in the summer months, the large garden hosts evening music performances, generally classical or jazz music, in a truly charming setting.
