The UniversiCà Museum in Druogno, in the Vigezzo Valley, offers a narrative, visual and multimedia itinerary that provides a complete overview of the stories, trades, traditions and characters of this Ossola valley: valuable history to pass on to future generations.
An iconographic itinerary tells the story of an Alpine civilisation largely linked to manual work: chimney sweeps, woodcutters, but also inventors, painters, writers and goldsmiths.
A dozen rooms lead visitors to rediscover the ancient crafts and 20th-century traditions of the Painters’ Valley. One room is completely dedicated to the Vigezzina-Centovalli Railway, which has always been the backbone of the Vigezzo Valley and today is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Ossola Valley.
One room is dedicated to wood, the traditional asset of the Vigezzo Valley, representing the work of many woodcutters (including women) and of the large cableways built to transport wood. We then immerse ourselves in the world of alpine pasture, milk processing, rye growing and the production of the famous black bread of Coimo. A room presents an iconographic selection of the wonderful female costumes of the Vigezzo Valley, while there’s also a space dedicated to the figure of the smuggler, the contraband trades person, who in these impenetrable valleys between Italy and Switzerland had a role as controversial as it is fascinating.
In 2017 a new exhibition was inaugurated on geography and cartography, the Geo d’Etica section, which tells the story of the meticulous activity linked to the production of maps, from tradition to innovation.
