Torre Ferrerio in Piedimulera

Torre Ferrerio in Piedimulera, located near the “mulera”, the ancient road leading to the Anzasca Valley, is one of the most prestigious and elegant examples of fortified towers in the Ossola Valley.
Construction of the Torre Ferrerio took place from 1594 to 1598, and it allowed the town of Piedimulera to play an important defensive and customs role up to the mid-18th century.
With its Renaissance elegance, the tower dominates the roofs of the ancient town of Piedimulera from its impressive height of 30 metres. It has a rectangular floor plan and five floors topped by a roof in granite tiles, supported by a wooden framework. The façade towards the town of Piedimulera has elaborate late-Renaissance decorations, while the one on the other side is decidedly plainer and more austere.

The ground floor opens onto a small courtyard and once contained a hall with an impressive stone fireplace: it is now a museum of the tower itself, with an exhibition illustrating its history. The first floor is closed at present. The second floor houses a room inaugurated in 2011 to honour Giorgio Spezia, an illustrious scientist born in Piedimulera, and mark the 100th anniversary of his death. A number of work tools are on display on this floor, together with photographs and panels illustrating some eminent citizens of Piedimulera. It also houses the famous “Val d’Ossola excursions map”, drawn up by Spezia himself.
On the third floor are decorations in stucco, Baroque stylistic elements and putti with the Ferreri family arms. The fourth floor is also called “embrasures floor” because it has a lot of embrasures, still visible nowadays, which were used to hit the enemies remaining protected. The fifth floor, originally the most richly decorated and still the most interesting, due to the presence – all around the perimeter of the walls – of a series of 16th century frescoes depicting hunting scenes in which the owner of the ancient tower, Desiderio Ferrari, is also the key character.
