Just beyond the walls of the ancient Mattarella Castle, on the side of the mule track towards the mountain, there was formerly an aedicule that contained a fresco of a Madonna and Child painted in the late 16th-century by an unknown artist. The chapel was named Madonna delle Grazie: in 1658, it was described as a small devotional chapel on top of the hill, with a vaulted roof and stone floor. In the same year, the Bishop decided to make it part of the Sacred Mount Calvary of Domodossola, ordering that the chapel be enlarged, while preserving the ancient image of the Blessed Virgin.
It appears that the solution was not satisfactory and in 1660 a real oratory was created, which is what visitors can admire today.
