Mergozzo is a land of stone and crystal-clear waters, dominated by the awesome presence of Montorfano, to which the local Ecomuseo del Granito (Granite Ecomuseum) is dedicated. It has a centuries old history, with archaeological traces dating from the stone age and preserved in the Municipal Archaeological Museum.
Visiting Mergozzo, therefore, will be like making a journey back through the centuries.
The Granite Ecomuseum involves various areas of the whole of Mergozzo’s territory and surroundings, including the areas where pink Candoglia marble, white Montorfano granite, green Mergozzo granite and pink Baveno granite are quarried. The core is Montorfano, an isolated hill that looks like a mastodontic block of white granite.
The multipurpose facilities of the former Mergozzo Dairy (inaugurated in 2019), in addition to a conference room and areas to be used as education workshops, houses an exhibition area devoted to stone with the tools and equipment used by the quarrymen and stone masons working the Montorfano granite and Candoglia marble quarries.
