Megalithic remains of Montecrestese

A number of structures dating from the megalithic civilisation are worth visiting in Castelluccio e Croppola, two tiny hamlets of Montecrestese; thousands of years later, we can now only conjecture that these long stones embedded in the ground may be the remains of religious worship handed down in time.
Studies, research and reconnaissances have led to the discovery of stone artefacts with very unusual characteristics: there are structures with a false vault roof, that is one made with rows of overlapping stones that overhang as they continue up to the closing slab, quadrangular terracing and lastly groups of menhirs, large blocks of stone in the shape of a parallelepiped embedded vertically in the ground.
Up to now, three main groupings have been identified in the Montecrestese area. The one in Castelluccio is a structure with an elongated rectangular floor plan, placed on terracing and made up of ten menhirs. The sizes and shapes are such that it is only possible for one human body to lie within them: it is easy to assume therefore that they were not intended as dwellings, but rather for burial of the dead.
In 2000, the attention of scholars and local authorities focussed on the complexes in Montecrestese with objective and reliable georeferencing of the elements present in the area, in order to allow subsequent archaeological and astronomic analysis: a process of study, preservation and promotion which will certainly continue over time.
