Located on the southern slope of Mattarella hill, at an altitude of 263 metres, the Church of San Quirico, which dates back to the 11th century, is considered one of the oldest and most fascinating churches in Ossola Valley.
After the Second World War, major renovation work was carried out, during which many frescoes were discovered in the apse area. The current Church of San Quirico contains structures that date back to the 11th century, while the interior frescoes date back to the 14th and 15th centuries.
Despite the various renovations that it has undergone over the centuries, the church has maintained a Constantinian style inside and a Lombard style outside. Inside, it contains a single nave with a wooden ceiling. On three of its outer sides, it is surrounded by a churchyard used as an ancient cemetery and the bell tower houses a bell made in 1605.
This gem is well worth a visit: it is a treasure chest of art and architecture just a stone’s throw from the centre of Domodossola.
