The Sagra del Fungo (Mushroom Harvest Festival) was first held in Trontano in 1985 with the purpose of promoting one of the most typical products from the Val d’Ossola woodland and takes place over an entire weekend in September. The motivation behind all of Ossola’s food festivals certainly lies in the delicacies it has to offer, inundating Trontano with food-loving visitors eager to sample the classic risotto with porcini mushrooms, polenta, black bread from Coimo, exquisite cured meats and local cheeses and the traditional dessert from Trontano, credenzin: black bread doused in butter with walnuts, raisins and apples, and baked in the town’s old bread ovens.
The festival also showcases displays, exhibitions, contests, arts and crafts areas, music and fun activities. The Sagra del fungo ends on Sunday with the traditional head-to-head contest between the town neighbourhoods, and the carnival float parade, making it an opportunity that is too good to miss, in every sense, to discover some of the beautiful old treasures of Trontano, like the town’s bread ovens, the old press machine, typical mills and the old wash house.
The Sagra del Fungo in Trontano is easy to reach along the special routes on the scenic train that runs along the Vigezzina-Centovalli railway line.
