Every year, Coimo, a hamlet of Druogno in Vigezzo Valley, which is renowned for its black bread, pays tribute to the sweet autumn forest fruit with the traditional ‘Castagnata Coimese‘ (Coimo Chestnut Harvest).
This food festival features a range of culinary specialities, from typical amiasc (sheets of batter made from water and flour and fried on scorching iron hotplates, served with butter and salt), tripe, salamis and grilled ribs with polenta, to local cured meats and cheese, and delicious home-made cakes.
But the stars of the event are the delicious roast chestnuts, or ‘caldarroste‘, chestnuts roasted over an open fire, with their unmistakeable scent that wafts throughout the town. Music, dance and events bring Coimo to life, while the village’s inhabitants take to the stage in a unique parade, evoking old customs and traditions from bygone times.
